Day 9 Sharing Reading

Image
Today was our last day of RPI. It was good to go over some of the things we have been learning about as it refreshes it in my mind. One thing I would like to do after today's session is make a page on our studio learning site where students and staff can access templates for DLOs. I think this will make it easier for us to make sure we include a variety of different create tasks as well as giving the students some choice over what they can use. It will depend on how each teacher uses it, but I like the idea of giving the students some choice over choosing how they want to share their learning. One problem I can see coming from that is some students will always choose the same templates to work with. To work around this, I could give the students three templates they can choose from with the understanding that for each task they need to use a different template. One thing I need to work on from this is making sure that I plan to give students blogging time. At the moment I try to g...

Day 8 RPI Creating

Image
Today we were looking at the create part of learning. It was great to talk about how important creativity is in different aspects of learning and life in general.  We were introduced to a few AI programs that could be helpful for create tasks for the students. Today I tried Craiyon ai image creator for the first time. I used this to create an image to go behind the poem we looked at today. Is this something our students will be able to access and use at school? I would like to have a play around with this and see the difference between giving a detailed description and a basic description. Will it make a difference? Could I use that as a teaching point for our students with using ai? Could this show how important character descriptions are within their writing? I really enjoyed the poem activity and think this would be a great task to do with my group - how can I bring some collaboration into this task?  It was good to be reminded how important giving opportunities to co...

RPI Day 7 - Thinking

Image
It was good today to be given some new places to explore. In particular, I really liked hearing about the Adobe podcast that has just come out. We learnt that it can put what the students are talking about into text to make it easier for them to edit, ready for the podcast. I was thinking can I use this with their reading aloud? The students would read a passage of text using the podcast, convert it into text and then analyse how well they have read. Are there any errors in what they read?  I would like to explore it first to see how or if it puts punctuation in. During reading observations, I have found that there is still a group of students, when reading aloud, that do not read punctuation. If it does put punctuation in, I wonder if the students would notice that theirs is different to the text they have read from.  One thing I really want to action next week is the provocation. I have chosen to do a provocation of, sports are gendered. I think this will create a good...

Day 6 - Vocab and Decoding

Image
It was good to be reminded today of all the different tools and 'tricks' that can be used within Google Docs. I will need to refresh myself on this and teach some of these to my students. I especially liked being reminded of the citing function within Google Docs and think this will be good to show my literacy group as that is a skill they will be using once they go to high school or even further, to university. Listening to all the different ideas of how you can teach different aspect of vocabulary and how important it is for understanding has shown me that I do minimal work in teaching vocab. This is something I am looking forward to bringing more into my lessons. With this I would like to explore Wordwall more and see how this can assist me in my teaching.  I particularly liked the word knowledge scale and think this could be something I use with my learners, not only for me but so the students can see the progress they make with understanding words. I have lots of ideas flo...

Day 5 RPI

Planning a Reading Programme. Unfortunately, I had Covid during this week and only made it through half of the day.  What I did take away from this day is that I need to make a literacy timetable that is visible to the students. At the moment, my literacy group knows what is expected from them and when they need to get work completed, however, I can see the benefit of having a visible timetable for both my students and myself. What I am struggling with is how to make it so it works for both myself, my students, and within the studio. I really enjoyed the creating suspense activity and have used a similar one in past years. I would like to do this with my readers and help them make that link between what they are reading and how they can use that within their writing.  Because I did not complete this session, I feel like I am behind and did not complete all of the homework. I am hoping to catch up with this before day 7.

Day 4 RPI - Guided Reading

Today when we were looking at our homework, I realised that my students were using Screencastify but that they can use Screencast. I will be looking into this at school. I think someone mentioned that you can create transcripts from this, if you can I would like to use this with my students. I know some of my learners don't hear the mistakes they make when they are reading or listening back to themselves, I wonder if they could pick up any errors from a transcript or maybe do a compare and contrast activity with their transcript and the original text. I will need to look into this more and how well it does the transcript. I found the rubric for reading observations helpful. This is something I am going to try and do more frequently with my students as well as getting them to mark themselves and think about their next steps. I think this will give them more accountability and understanding for completing their next steps and continuing to improve their reading. 'Let the students...

Day 3 RPI - Text Selection

Today we were looking at text selection and building a set of texts. For me today was a lot of reminding me of things I have learnt previously but through the years, for various reasons, I have either forgotten about them or haven't used them to their full extent. One thing I don't think I have been using well recently is having multi-modal texts. It was great today to go back through this and think about how I can use these within the task board and how I could use videos to preload some prior knowledge before a guided reading session. This also reminded me of ETV and I've thought about how I could use this as an independent reading task with a video. Being able to put questions through the video that the students have to answer will show me the students who are actually watching the videos and what understanding they are getting from the video.  Today I have also been thinking about different novels I could do with the students. In particular either Goodnight Mr Tom or Th...
