Day 4 RPI - Guided Reading

Today when we were looking at our homework, I realised that my students were using Screencastify but that they can use Screencast. I will be looking into this at school. I think someone mentioned that you can create transcripts from this, if you can I would like to use this with my students. I know some of my learners don't hear the mistakes they make when they are reading or listening back to themselves, I wonder if they could pick up any errors from a transcript or maybe do a compare and contrast activity with their transcript and the original text. I will need to look into this more and how well it does the transcript.

I found the rubric for reading observations helpful. This is something I am going to try and do more frequently with my students as well as getting them to mark themselves and think about their next steps. I think this will give them more accountability and understanding for completing their next steps and continuing to improve their reading.

'Let the students read the text and enjoy the text before telling them the LI and SC' This is different from how I normally do my reading groups. I've always told the students the LI and SC before they have started reading a text but I like the idea of having them reading the text just for the sake of enjoyment and then telling them the LI and SC. I can see how this wouldn't work for every text but I think it is important to give students time to read for enjoyment in class rather than always reading for a learning purpose.

Thank you for sharing your insightful takeaways from Day 4 of the RPI: Guided Reading (& comprehension). We are super pleased that you have been motivated to learn more about Screencast for Chromebooks and the transcribing function. Here is a link to a video Dorothy shared in our Day 3 Kaupapa and Pedagogy session explaining these features: https://youtu.be/7mp1TcpJfF4

I totally agree that the observation tools, especially Nell Duke’s LWR (Listening-While-Reading) would be worthwhile to explore further and try out. Do have a look at the website linked into Session 4 today for further reading.

I had a fabulous catch up with Helen this afternoon at the Mentor Drop in session, and reiterated how up to date you are with the Mahi Tracker and your insightful contributions to our break out discussions. She mentioned that you are taking what we offer and adapting and innovating for your class and context, which is exactly what we want!

I’m really looking forward to hearing all about your guided reading practice adjustments for the homework and your further investigation into the data your reading observations of learners will give you.

  2. As always you have done some great reflecting about what you could change or implement into your reading programme. I like the idea of letting the students have a read of the story first too, just for enjoyment before sharing LI and SC. I wonder how many students get turned off the story before they have read it, because they are straight away thinking about what the teacher wants them to do, and that we are going to be "pulling apart" the story rather than just enjoying the text?
I look forward to chatting about your practise adjustments and how the transcipts go with the students.

  3. Kia ora Talei,
Screencast will change your life! It is embedded into the chromebooks and you don't have to go hunting for it. Plus you can make as many videos as you want. I really like the idea of using transcripts to analyse reading. Would make a self-reflection and buddy reflection really powerful. They wouldn't need to read much either.

I also want to know how it goes with engaging students in the story, rather than introducing the LO first. Have you tried it and noticed a difference?

Keep up the great learning and blogging,
:) Sharon - Te Ara Tūhura Education Programme Leader
