DFI Week 2

To start the session off this week we looked at the Learn/Ako part of Manaiakalani’s Learn, Create, Share. It was great to be reminded of how the process works with the students and that it may look different between schools and learners. Using technology is a fantastic way to engage reluctant learners and there are so many tools available to assist learners of every level. Looking at Google Meet helped me to refresh my memory as I haven’t really used this since the lockdown. In particular, being reminded about how to set one up. I found it helpful knowing that through the Google Meet booking I can share documents or pictures that are of relevance to the meet. I really enjoyed learning about google keep and think that this will be useful in both my personal and professional life. In particular, I liked how you can take pictures of a text and then grab the text and put it into a word document so a child is able to listen to the story and discuss it afterwards. DFI Day 1

Digital Fluency Intensive 2020 Day One Today was the first day of the DFI course. I was feeling nervous and excited to learn more about Manaiakalani and to upskill my digital knowledge. It was great to hear the backstory of Manaikalani and how “Learn, Create, Share” came about. Today I really enjoyed learning about the explore tool in google docs. I think this will be a great tool to use with my learners as I have found that many get distracted easily when they are using more than just their word doc. I am already thinking about how I can use this in my Inquiry unit for the children to explore and understand some of the technical vocabularies they will be using throughout their inquiry process. I will also be showing the children how they can reference a site through this tool. I think this is important as we have spoken to them about putting things into their own words however, they often just copy and paste text from the site they are exploring.
