DFI Day 1
Digital Fluency Intensive 2020 Day One
Today was the first day of the DFI course. I was feeling nervous and excited to learn more about Manaiakalani and to upskill my digital knowledge.
It was great to hear the backstory of Manaikalani and how “Learn, Create, Share” came about.
Today I really enjoyed learning about the explore tool in google docs. I think this will be a great tool to use with my learners as I have found that many get distracted easily when they are using more than just their word doc. I am already thinking about how I can use this in my Inquiry unit for the children to explore and understand some of the technical vocabularies they will be using throughout their inquiry process. I will also be showing the children how they can reference a site through this tool. I think this is important as we have spoken to them about putting things into their own words however, they often just copy and paste text from the site they are exploring. I am hoping that through this it will help them to understand why it is important to write things in their own words.
I will also be introducing to the children how to use headings and the table of contents in google docs. I am hoping through using those tools we can make sure the students only use one document for their writing. They can date their work and make it a subheading and add it to their table of contents. This will be helpful for them to easily look back on specific days work as well as make it easier for me to find specific days work.
Using Docs as a tool for graphic media was something I was never very confident with. After today’s session, I feel a lot more confident about it and will be using it to create posters and information for the children. Today I created a poster on how to make yoghurt. I created this because in Inquiry we are looking at growing good bacteria and what foods have bacteria. I am hoping this will help the students as it makes the process they will be using rewindable. It also makes the procedure look more interesting for them which will hopefully engage them in the process of making yoghurt.

Sweet! I might get my daughters onto that recipe.
ReplyDeleteKia ora Talei,
ReplyDeleteIt is great to have you as part of the DFI Online Friday Group. From your blog post I can see that you have got so much out of the first session. What a great create you have made using Google Docs - I might have to try that recipe myself! Keep up the great reflecting and I will see you (online) Friday.

Kia ora Talei,
ReplyDeleteIt was really great to read all about the things you have learnt and how you can see it helping in the classroom. Explore is a bit of a game changer. I did have a giggle when I first learnt about it because I'd wondered what it was but never bothered to explore.
Isn't it great having a chance to connect what you are learning with your own practise and with the classroom?! Your recipe looks really good and will be easy for the students to follow.
Looking forward to your next blog post,
Sharon
