DFI Week 2

To start the session off this week we looked at the Learn/Ako part of Manaiakalani’s Learn, Create, Share. It was great to be reminded of how the process works with the students and that it may look different between schools and learners. Using technology is a fantastic way to engage reluctant learners and there are so many tools available to assist learners of every level.

Looking at Google Meet helped me to refresh my memory as I haven’t really used this since the lockdown. In particular, being reminded about how to set one up. I found it helpful knowing that through the Google Meet booking I can share documents or pictures that are of relevance to the meet.

I really enjoyed learning about google keep and think that this will be useful in both my personal and professional life. In particular, I liked how you can take pictures of a text and then grab the text and put it into a word document so a child is able to listen to the story and discuss it afterwards. This will be something that I will be sharing with my colleagues and will be hoping to use in my planning/teaching.

It was good to be reminded of all the extras both Gmail and Google calendars have. I have started organising my Gmail account but will need to keep working on this as it is very unorganised at the moment.

I have added the Toby chrome extension as I am someone that always has a lot of tabs open. I have had a quick play with it today and have created some groups already. I will need to keep working on this as well but I like that I will be able to do this as I’m working. My bookmark bar is now becoming rather crowded so I like that I can use Toby for things that I don’t necessarily need to bookmark but I also don’t want to lose.

    Great working with you today and problem solving our Google Meet issues! There was so much information today - thanks for including the part about the Learn Create Share at the beginning, I agree that the technology we have is a great way to motivate those who are not as motivated to learn or who have some barriers that technology can remove for them - why wouldn't we use it if we can?

    I loved the organisational stuff today - G mail, calendars, bookmarks and I've been creating Toby mini groups too - I have one for DFI and one for me to open each morning when I get to work - it's going to give me at least enough time for another cup of coffee! :)

    Do you think you will use Google meet with your learners in the way we did today or do you use Screencastify?

      It was great working with you too Rachael and yes having and solving our problem was great!

      I haven't been brave enough to use Screencastify with the class yet but I am hoping that will change because it would be a great way for them to evidence their learning as well as share what they have learnt.

    It was a pleasure learning alongside you as part of the DFI Week 2. I really enjoyed watching the Meet recording that you made discussing blogs with Rachael. I am pleased you found the session on Google Keep helpful. It sure is an amazing tool and can really support with the enhancement of your workflow. Day 9 Sharing Reading

 Today was our last day of RPI. It was good to go over some of the things we have been learning about as it refreshes it in my mind. One thing I would like to do after today's session is make a page on our studio learning site where students and staff can access templates for DLOs. I think this will make it easier for us to make sure we include a variety of different create tasks as well as giving the students some choice over what they can use. It will depend on how each teacher uses it, but I like the idea of giving the students some choice over choosing how they want to share their learning. One problem I can see coming from that is some students will always choose the same templates to work with. To work around this, I could give the students three templates they can choose from with the understanding that for each task they need to use a different template. Day 1 RPI

 Today was the first day of the reading intensive. I enjoyed looking through the responses from the survey and how they were used in a lesson. The students were given the challenge to see if they could change the results. This gave the students ownership and student voice and will hopefully increase reading for enjoyment. I would like to try the 'Toss and Talk' activity with my students to get them thinking and explaining their reasoning behind why they may or may not agree with something. Getting that discussion going while reinforcing the ground rules for talk.  Another activity I would like to try with my readers is 'choosing a book to fit'. I have some readers who think that reading is not for them, but I believe they haven't found the right book for them. If I can teach them how to find a book that fits them, this will encourage them to love reading and be more open to other books in the future. Day 5 RPI

 Planning a Reading Programme. Unfortunately, I had Covid during this week and only made it through half of the day.  What I did take away from this day is that I need to make a literacy timetable that is visible to the students. At the moment, my literacy group knows what is expected from them and when they need to get work completed, however, I can see the benefit of having a visible timetable for both my students and myself. What I am struggling with is how to make it so it works for both myself, my students, and within the studio. I really enjoyed the creating suspense activity and have used a similar one in past years. I would like to do this with my readers and help them make that link between what they are reading and how they can use that within their writing.  Because I did not complete this session, I feel like I am behind and did not complete all of the homework. I am hoping to catch up with this before day 7.
