Week 7 DFI

This week we looked at the pedagogy and kaupapa of Manaiakalani. I liked the talk there was about the positive cybersmart language. So instead of talking about being a bully-free school, talking about being a kindness school. It was also interesting listening to why Manaiakalani like schools to have 1:1 devices because it gives the students more ownership.

Today we looked at different devices that our students use. I found this really helpful as I have only used a Chromebook when helping the students at school. It was great going over all the different shortcut keys and different tools the kids can use on their Chromebook. I also tried using screencastify for the first time and the video is below. This is something I want to use more often with the kids as we ask them to use screencastify to explain their learning. I believe it will also help some of our learners by breaking down some of the barriers they may have.

On the iPad, we looked at Explain Everything. This is a new tool for me and I quite enjoyed using it. It was easy to use and easy to put soundbites in. This means that students that struggle with reading can listen to the instructions and still complete the activities. Below is a short video with a whiteboard I constructed on the DFI course.

  1. Kia ora Talei,

What a great screencastify you created. It seemed so professional and not at all like your first time using it. Bravo!

Explain Everything is a good tool, I haven't used it a lot with older students, mostly because it's functionality seems better on an iPad. You can use it on a chromebook though, I think. The ability to record your voice is key though. Book Creator can be a good change from EE too.

    Ngā mihi,
    Sharon
