Survey Reflection

After my literacy group completed the survey, the students were really keen to see the results. I wasn't expecting this as in the past, with other surveys, they haven't been that interested in seeing them.

Forms response chart. Question title: 1. I like reading at school. Number of responses: 28 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: 2. I like reading books in my own time for enjoyment (e.g. not for school; at home or the library).. Number of responses: 28 responses.

I wasn't surprised that the majority of students said they didn't enjoy reading at school but the numbers were closer than I expected. I was really pleased to see that more students do enjoy reading in their own time outside of school. Through discussions with the students, I think that this difference is because some students don't know what books interest them or how to find out how to choose a book that they will enjoy. It will be interesting to see how this changes after I work with them more on how to choose a book they will enjoy. I will also take this on board when I am thinking about what texts to use with my reading groups.

Forms response chart. Question title: 5. I think reading books in my own time can help me (e.g. make me smarter or more relaxed).. Number of responses: 28 responses.

I was pleased to see that half of the group understood how books can help them. Through discussion, it was evident that all students knew that reading could help in some way, but most didn't realise how many different benefits there are. It was great to hear the discussion that arose from this and hearing from students who did use reading as relaxation explain it to those who did not find it relaxing.

I am quite excited to see how much of an impact/change I can have on this group of readers throughout the year. I am hopeful that when I ask the students to complete the survey at the end, the results will look different and hopefully more students will engage with reading and understand how to find a book to read that they will enjoy.

  1. Thanks for sharing your survey results. There were some really interesting responses in there, and you are correct some unexpected results too. So good that the students were keen to see the results too and could discuss these. You have lots of great ideas on how to better use the school library and your reading lessons to introduce different types of texts to your students and to find books that are 'best fit' for them. Your students will have lots of great ideas too.
It might be worth further exploring the benefits of reading with them as part of our inquiry work - aiding sleep, improving focus and concentration, mental health etc, perhaps a goal about how they are going to action a change in their reading habits.

Thank you for sharing your thorough analysis and reflections on your class Reader Profile Survey results. I was so pleased to read that your students were looking forward to analysing their data. As you say, this can be super purposeful and empowering - especially when you start exploring with them how to ‘take action’ to shift the trends more positively and to extend their reading range and choices.

Like you, I will be really interested to hear how they engage with the ‘Good Fit Book’ guidance and how this might inform their reading diet and uptake.
We will be discussing the longitudinal tracking of this data on Day 2. I look forward to hearing how you might share and message with ākonga the resource we will be offering to support this.

  3. It was definitely food for thought with the survey. My students were also very keend to analyse the data and see what it said about them! Like you we found this really purposeful and empowering and I have a group of students making it their mission to find 'good fit' books.
One thing I was really surprised with was that the majority of my students did not like receiving books as gifts. I was really saddened by this. Some had never received a special book as a gift. I am making it my mission to make sure that each child in my class will receive a book this year from me!
I am looking forward to this journey and how we can switch on a love of reading for our students!
