Day 3 RPI - Text Selection

Today we were looking at text selection and building a set of texts.

For me today was a lot of reminding me of things I have learnt previously but through the years, for various reasons, I have either forgotten about them or haven't used them to their full extent.

One thing I don't think I have been using well recently is having multi-modal texts. It was great today to go back through this and think about how I can use these within the task board and how I could use videos to preload some prior knowledge before a guided reading session. This also reminded me of ETV and I've thought about how I could use this as an independent reading task with a video. Being able to put questions through the video that the students have to answer will show me the students who are actually watching the videos and what understanding they are getting from the video.

Today I have also been thinking about different novels I could do with the students. In particular either Goodnight Mr Tom or The Boy in The Stipped Pyjamas. With this, I have been thinking about how I could use the task board to support the learning they are doing through the novel.

When thinking about the window, mirror, and sliding glass door, the movie Freedom Writers came to mind. I have seen the movie but I haven't read their published book so I'm not sure if it would be suitable for my students, but I think this would fit the window, mirror, and glass sliding door well. For some of our students, the experiences the students in the movie have would be things they see/hear about within their community or on the news, for others, they will be able to see themselves in some of the situations and for some it will be a completely different way of living. In particular, I like the message that the movie portrays. I will need to explore this further and see if the book is suitable for my students and at an appropriate reading level.

  1. Kia Ora Talei,
I agree with you it seems even though we hear don't throw the baby out with the bath water it is very easy to do. With ETV do you have a school scubscription? I have never heard of it before so I am very interested in trying.
With our class novel, while I read they have to draw a particular part and then during reading on the must do I have the ponder which relates to the novel. It was an idea I picked up form another teacher and I thought it was a good way to start discussions but also practise justifying their ideas. Picking a novel is also my next challenge as I would like to do a different one each term.
    Enjoy the break

  2. Kia ora Talei

We are really encouraged that you had a number of takeaways from RPI Day 3 and that these included areas in your practice to “resurrect” where some valued practices have “dropped off” over time.

The use of multimodal texts, like video, can be purposefully used, as you point out, to activate prior knowledge, or to support pre-reading. This can also include the introduction of a new concept or topic, which students can view independently as the visual and audio modes can ‘bootstrap’ comprehension.

It’s good to hear that the concept of “windows, mirror and glass sliding doors” resonated with you. As you say, choosing texts that feature aspects of students' backgrounds or cultural identities is hugely important for indigenous and minority learners, who may not ‘see’ themselves that often in classroom texts. Here I’m thinking of Māori and Pasifika themes, settings, characters and histories. There are many School Journal texts that are culturally responsive in this way, and which you can supplement with YouTube videos.

I am really looking forward to watching your learners’ screencasts (or listening to their audio recordings) as part of your practice implementation for homework.

Have a fabulous break and I look forward to catching up next term.

  3. Great reminder about ETV and being able to add questions, quizes and comments throughout the video. It also groups similar or specific topic videos together so would be easy for you to find the resources to fit on your taskboards.
There are lots of great novel sets at school either in hard-copy sets or Elizabeth can sort group e-books through the library system. I love both those books and my classes in the past have really engaged with them too. Some of the NZ My story books would also fit with our school-wide concept of Action.
I look forward to seeing where you go next.
