Day 8 RPI Creating
Today we were looking at the create part of learning. It was great to talk about how important creativity is in different aspects of learning and life in general.
We were introduced to a few AI programs that could be helpful for create tasks for the students. Today I tried Craiyon ai image creator for the first time. I used this to create an image to go behind the poem we looked at today. Is this something our students will be able to access and use at school? I would like to have a play around with this and see the difference between giving a detailed description and a basic description. Will it make a difference? Could I use that as a teaching point for our students with using ai? Could this show how important character descriptions are within their writing?
I really enjoyed the poem activity and think this would be a great task to do with my group - how can I bring some collaboration into this task?
It was good to be reminded how important giving opportunities to collaborate is. I will try giving some tight tasks with opportunities to collaborate. I have dialled down how many opportunities I give for collaboration because of the behaviours of a few students. I'm now trying to think if I was giving tight or loose tasks at those times. I will see if any of those behaviours pop up again with collaborating on a tight task.
It was great to see Eugene's website with his novel studies on there. It looks like he has put a lot of work into that. Could I set up something like that for our studio? I will discuss this with Eugene and my team and see if we can put something together. I can see how a website like that would be very handy to have and can be a resource that is used over and over across different years. I think something like that would be easy enough to make changes to when required or if it does/doesn't work well with the students.
I would also like to build up a bank of 1 shot, 1 minute reviews. This could be set as a task for the students in their Reading Challenge and the videos can be used as a digital library for students. They will get a quick snapshot of what the book is about and whether or not they would enjoy reading it. I think some students will struggle with doing this at first, but I think they will get used to it. I can think of a few students who would really enjoy creating the 1 shot and some that might struggle keeping it to 1 minute.
Today we also saw a template for creating your own playing card, (think Pokemon style). Is this something that my students would enjoy? I would like to try this, but I'm not sure all students would engage with this. The only way to find out is to give it as an option and see how many students choose the playing card template.

ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased to read your many reflective questions from RPI Day 8: Create in Reading. It’s also really encouraging that you have been challenged to think about offering other ways to get students collaborating when they create, like the one-shot Book Trailer. As you intimated, there will be students who may be uncomfortable, or not quite ready fro the self-management challenges doing this, so having opportunities to work with a peer or be accountable to a small group taking different roles, could be supporting structures. Hats off to you, for your trailer, 200 Minutes of Danger book trailer: I am really keen to get my hands on a copy, especially with them bing short engaging stories!
I’m really looking forward to you feeding back in our breakout group on how your learners’ responded to the creative choices and opportunities you gave them from the practice implementation.

Kia ora Talei,
ReplyDeleteIt is so good to read the questions you are asking yourself as you travel through the journey of learning. There are some very good questions, and knowing your class, some great reasons as to why you might want to try things in a careful manner. I hope that you are able to implement a few of these during the next few weeks. It would be great to see what the students come up with. Possibly the one shots could be a great thing for library helpers to try out for the library. Surely Elizabeth would be keen to have them go up around the space, linked off a QR code?
Keep up the great learning and blogging,
:) Sharon - Te Ara Tūhura Education Programme Leader
