Day 9 Sharing Reading

Today was our last day of RPI.

It was good to go over some of the things we have been learning about as it refreshes it in my mind.

One thing I would like to do after today's session is make a page on our studio learning site where students and staff can access templates for DLOs. I think this will make it easier for us to make sure we include a variety of different create tasks as well as giving the students some choice over what they can use. It will depend on how each teacher uses it, but I like the idea of giving the students some choice over choosing how they want to share their learning. One problem I can see coming from that is some students will always choose the same templates to work with. To work around this, I could give the students three templates they can choose from with the understanding that for each task they need to use a different template.

One thing I need to work on from this is making sure that I plan to give students blogging time. At the moment I try to get them to blog after a create task, but I know I need to get better at this. I also need to give students more time to be able to go and comment on other students' blogs. I want to make sure that they are commenting on blogs from both our school and other schools within our cluster. Can I bring in a regular task where they have to share back information about a blog post they read, what they may have learned and if they would like to do a similar task? Or do I get them to do the task like we did today? I would like them to share back their information to the group or possibly in smaller groups.

  1. It has been fantastic to get to know you over the last 3 terms Talei! I have learnt so much from this PD and I look forward to continuing to implement it in my class and hub. I agree around the blogging time - as we talked about this morning I feel I have to plan for it otherwise it does not always happen.
Best wishes and I look forward to catching you again on line :)

A huge congratulations on completing the RPI and graduating the overall programme! I have so enjoyed following your professional learning journey and the insights you have consistently documented along the way.

Thank you for your many contributions to the discussions and practice experiences shared in our break out group. I hope that theory, resourcing, weekly task boards and Skill Builders offer you scope for rewinding back to the RPI Agendas over time to customise or redesign for learners in your context. I am also super pleased to read that you are keen to set up a site space for graphic organisers and that the examples on Day 9 have given you a range of templates to kick off with.

Do share your reader-profile survey results with us, once you follow up. We would be really interested in any shifts you find.

All the very best for the rest of the term and for some well-deserved non-contact time in the Term 3 break.

  3. Kia ora Talei. Well done and congratulations on completing the RPI programme. I know you have gained a lot and spent a lot of time reflecting on your own practice and how to improve your reading and literacy sessions for your students. It has been great to see you make changes and sustain these, in particular your students coming to the library regularly accessing books and using the space to support their tasks. I appreciated the opportunity to observe your lessons and chat and discuss ideas and where to next. I know you have done lots of sharing with your team too, and it would be great as you mention to create some templates that all students could access. Time for reflection does need to be explicitedly planned for, or as you say doesn't happen or doesn't get done well. The share part is a crucial element in the learning process and also provides you with lots of formative assessment information that can guide your teaching for the next lessons. I look forward to seeing how your literacy programme continues to develop.
